speech to text - for child with Dysgraphia

Your child with Dysgraphia needs to learn how to touch type.

When you have a child who is intelligent but thinks she has lesser IQ than those in her class because she cannot write. It’s time for you and the educators in the school rethink what needs to change. I was in a similar situation with my child who had all the answers to the lessons being taught in school when asked verbally, but when it was time to put her knowledge on paper she struggled and she concluded she had lesser IQ than others in her class. And for the record her assessment said she comes in 95 percentile where intelligence score was concerned.

While the teachers think that making them write will someday get them to write, the sad reality is that, it WON’T.

Now someone will tell you, nowadays, that’s not a problem. Just use speech to text. Sure, use speech to text, but the fact is that tool is also not perfect. You still need to edit the document and learning touch typing can come in handy.

So after listening to my bright child declaring she wasn’t intelligent I went looking for a Program that would help me teach her touch typing. What is touch typing? Touch typing means you can type without looking at the keyboard. Why is that important? That’s like driving. When you drive , do you keep your eyes on the road or the gear stick and indicator lever?

I looked at programs that taught typing like a game if you hit the letters correctly it will give you some score, unfortunately it did not tell you which fingers should hit which key. And that my friend is important when you’re learning to touch type. Then there were whose that made you type asdfgf and;lkjhj a bijillion times. And yup that will build muscle memory but do you think that’s fun for a child. They will detest it even more than writing.

So I went looking again and finally found this program that shows your child which finger is supposed to hit which key. It also speaks the letters and the words and in 5 lessons they type a small sentence. The program also teaches spellings while learning how to type. Can you believe it, for a child who struggled to write , typing a sentence in 5 lessons will feel such a great accomplishment. And that is so important for the confidence and self-esteem of your child.
